The Little Cloud’s Big Adventure

Children’s bedtime stories: High up in the sky, once upon a time, there lived a little cloud. His name was Cumulus; he was white and fluffy. He loved floating around and gazing at the world of humans. He used to see children playing in fields and animals running in the forests and rivers dancing under the rays of sunlight. Cumulus could only dream of an adventure.

One hot sun was lazily floating in the air, and Cumulus saw some kids playing in a field. They had been laughing and running around until one little girl stopped and was looking at something with tears in her eyes. “What’s wrong?” thought Cumulus. He wanted her to cheer up.
“I wish it would rain,” said Lily. “The flowers need water, and I want to splash in puddles!

Thinking for a moment, Cumulus said to himself, “Perhaps I can help!” He had never tried to make rain before; but he was anxious to contribute to making his lovely Lily happy.

Big as he could, Cumulus puffed himself up and began to gather moisture from the air all around him. He concentrated intently on how much fun it would be for Lily and her friends to splash about in the puddles. Slowly he felt himself growing heavy.

Come on, Cumulus! You can do it!” he goaded himself. And so, with a soft grumble, he started sprinkling tiny little droplets of water from his puffy body. Dripping little droplets at first, very soon it turned into a wee drizzle.

Lily looked up with wide eyes as the rain droplets started to fall upon her face. “It’s raining.” shouted Lily with glee. The others would laugh and dance in the rain while jumping and splashing in puddles that formed on the ground.

Cumulus felt proud of himself. He had helped make something beautiful for the children. As he watched them at play, he realized that making others happy is the biggest adventure of all.
But soon he discovered that the drizzle was turning into a heavy downpour. The children continued to have a ball but were getting soaked. “Oh no! I didn’t intend to make it pour so much!” shouted Cumulus.

JUST THEN, a wise old owl on a neighboring tree peered out at him and shouted out, “Little cloud, great that you wanted to help, but sometimes too much good becomes overwhelming.”
Cumulus started to feel worried but listened closely, “What should I do?”
The owl told him, “Try to find balance. You can give just enough rain for flowers but not soak everyone.”.

Realizing it had the owl’s word, Cumulus had drawn a deep breath, refocused and toned the rain to a gentle shower, lightly tickling the children as they splashed in delight within puddles of smaller proportions. Meanwhile flowers drank just what they needed.
Meanwhile, after a good while had passed, the sun emerged once again from behind Cumulus, bringing with it the wondrous colored rainbows in the sky. The children shouted in delight!

Cumulus beamed down at them and was joyful from within. He had learned an all-important lesson: helping others is wonderful, but finding balance is the key.
